Description

Temperature Requirements:

Tomatoes are a popular vegetable crop grown in India due to their wide range of varieties and uses. They require a warm climate and thrive in soils rich in organic matter. Tomatoes prefer temperatures ranging from 21°C to 30°C during daytime and 15°C to 21°C during night time. Rainfall should be adequate but not excessive, ideally between 75 cm to 150 cm annually.

Soil Type:

Tomato can be grown on a wide range of soils from sandy to heavy clay. However, well-drained,sandy or red loam soils rich in organic matter with a pH range of 6.0-7.0 are considered as ideal.

Varieties:

Common tomato varieties grown in India include Arka Abhijit, Arka Meghali, Pusa Ruby, and Pusa Gaurav

1. Arka Abhijit is a high-yielding hybrid variety developed by IIHR Bangalore, while Arka Meghali is a semi-determinate hybrid variety released by IIHR Bangalore

2. Pusa Ruby is a cultivar that matures quickly and is suitable for both processing and table variety, while Pusa Gaurav is a dwarf, bushy plant with moderate foliage coverage

3. Other notable varieties include Arka Shrestha, Arka Vikas, and Pusa Swarnim

In India, tomatoes are mainly produced in states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar.
